Story

The game puts the player in the role Adol Christin.  He arrived in a small town called Minea in the land of Esteria.  He gets called upon by a fortune teller named Sara who tells about a great evil that is threatening the land.  Adol must then travel the lands to search for the six books of Ys, which contain the knowledge he needs to defeat the evil forces.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Ys I and II Chronicles involves a fast-paced battle system.  The way the system works is that during battle, Adol must fight the enemies by running into them.  Whether Adol damages the enemy or is damaged himself is dependent on his position relative to the enemy's.  If Adol is centered on the enemy when he runs into it, he will take damage.  If Adol runs into the edge of the enemy, he will damage the enemy.  This is how the battle works in both games, although Ys II adds magic spells.

Series

In every Ys game, the player controls Adol Cristin, who travels the land in order to fight off evil forces.  Each main installment is an action RPG although the battles vary game-by-game.  The original Ys game has the player run into enemies.  Ys II and IV use the same system but adds extra skills to vary the gameplay.  Ys III is a side-scrolling game similar to Legend of Zelda II: Adventures of Link.  Ys V plays more like a typical action RPG like the traditional Legend of Zelda games.  Ys VI uses a more fast-paced system that allows the player to change weapons during battles, which mixes up the moveset.  Ys Seven uses a multi-character party system in which the player could change control to different characters during battle.  Ys: The Oath of Felghana is a remake of Ys III that uses a similar battle system to Ys VI.
